Having gone through an intense deliberation and five-day interview sessions with the top fourteen shortlisted candidates, we have narrowed down the list to the top four delegates. The decision to select the final delegation has not been an easy process. We rank candidates through stages of application using selected indicators and take those assessment results into account in long-hours deliberation. We ensure that the process is fair, and commit ourselves to a transparent, informed and robust approach until we came into consensus.
This year's applicants were among the most competitive in terms of quality and diversity of knowledge and background. It is to our greatest honor to witness how Y20 Summit Selection has consistently attracted the brightest talent pool Indonesia is proud to have. Although we consistently set our recruitment standard high and entrance mechanism rigorous, we are proud to retain a 3% acceptance rate, showing enduring enthusiasm to our programs.
We would also like to take this opportunity to thank all applicants to this year's Y20 Summit Recruitment for their courage, thoughts and participation. We enjoyed the process of carefully reviewing all the submitted materials and interviewing the final candidates, while learning more about their interests and passions. If you are one of our applicants this year, we genuinely wish you, an aspiring young Indonesian, the very best in continuing your passions in your respective fields, and in strengthening your self-development for the benefit of our nation. We invite you to continue to stay in touch and work with us in the future, including applying for next year's delegation in Germany as well as participating in our upcoming programs. In addition, we would particularly like to once again draw your attention to the selection arrangement for this year that only four new delegates for the Summit were chosen. A delegate from last year’s recruitment process, Wafa Taftazani from The University of Cambridge, was placed as the fifth delegate this year. Due to the unforeseeable circumstances, Wafa was not able to attend the 2015 Summit in Istanbul, Turkey. Considering his significant relevance and outstanding contribution during the preparation leading up to last year’s Y20 Summit, we decided to send him as part of 2016 delegation to the Y20 in China!
Having said them all, Indonesian Youth Diplomacy is hereby pleased to announce the 5 selected delegates that will represent Indonesia at the official Y20 Summit 2016!
1. Andreyka Natalegawa
Andreyka Natalegawa is an undergraduate student at New York University, currently pursuing honors major in Political Science with minors in Social and Public Policy and Chinese. Andreyka serves as a managing editor at Think Nusantara, an online publication designed to provide young Indonesians with a platform to engage with issues of sustainable development.
Before joining Think Nusantara, Andreyka started his professional career at the Jakarta Globe in 2015, composing over a dozen cover stories on issues related to sustainable development, human rights, and foreign policy. Prior to working at the Jakarta Globe, Andreyka served as a delegate to the ANU Asia-Pacific Week 2014.
A recipient of the NYU Future Fund Scholarship in 2015, Andreyka spent a period of five months studying in Shanghai, China. Over the course of his studies, Andreyka has focused on both foreign and domestic politics, and the intersection between the two spheres. Andreyka is in the process of developing a game theoretical conflict model based upon his research on the Rohingya refugee crisis.
As a passionate student activist and advocate for social change, Andreyka is deeply involved on-campus. Andreyka currently serves as a student co-chair on the NYU Advisory Task Force on Diversity and Inclusion. Additionally, Andreyka is an executive of the NYU Indonesian Students Association, and was recently a founding member of the NYU Asian Pacific Islander Students Collective.
Through attending the Y20 conference, Andreyka hopes to democratize the process of enacting foreign policy, working with all constituents to forge a better future for Indonesia.
2. Fadhila El Discha
Fadhila El Discha is currently pursuing a master's degree in Sustainable Energy Technology Program at Delft University of Technology as one of the grantees of Indonesian Endowment Fund for Education Scholarship. Born and raised in Pekanbaru, she witnessed first-hand the annual forest-fire adverse aftermath on the well-being of both people and the environment. This is one of her strong drivers to be involved in the Indonesian climate change actions upon finishing her study in Delft.
Being keen with the youth empowerment, sustainability, and climate change issues, Fadhila was involved in a number of organizations and summits. She is currently an active committee of both the Indonesian Student Association (PPI) of Delft and of The Netherlands. Fadhila was also one of the Boards of the Delft Energy Club in 2015, a student association that aims to involve and empower students to catalyze the energy transition by connecting them to opportunities in the sustainable energy field. Fadhila was graduated cum laude from Chemical Engineering University of Gadjah Mada. During her bachelor study she won several competitions, one of them being the 2nd winner of Indonesia Chemical Engineering Challenge Problem Solving Competition held by ITB. She also represented Indonesia in the International Petroleum Energy Conference 2014 in Qatar and was one the alumni of Young Leaders for Indonesia National 2014 held by McKinsey & Company.
During her spare time, Fadhila enjoys blogging, dancing, and travelling.
3. Hanifah Ahmad
Hanifah graduated BA with honors in International Relations from the University of Indonesia and will shortly be starting graduate study in Master of Public Policy at the Blavatnik School of Government, University of Oxford. She has 2 years experience working in multilateral donor-funded and consulting projects.
She now works as a Policy Analyst at the Embassy of the United Kingdom overseeing good governance and anti-corruption issues where she manages bilateral projects, lobbies with the Indonesian government and civil society organisations, and produces analytical works such as diplomatic telegrams for the UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office. Her portfolio also spans into helping managing high level visits and engagements, for instance, Prime Minister David Cameron visit to Jakarta last July and deputising for the UK government external outreach programme in Bandung and Surabaya. Having attended the Open Government Partnership Summit in London as Indonesia's youth ambassador and an avid MUN enthusiast since college where she collectively produced 14 awards in two years, she is quite keen that the Y20 Summit, an official platform that it is, will enable better understanding of youth landscape that can recommend realistic and innovative ideas within the G20 and domestically in Indonesia.
4. Peter Hansel Gumulia
Peter is an Associate Consultant at Bain & Company with experiences in North America, South East Asia and, due to an upcoming move, the Middle East. At Bain, Peter works with a group of high performing individuals, solving the most complex problems of the world’s largest and fastest growing companies and global organizations. His experiences include improving customer experience for a major media company, constructing strategic transformation blueprint for an end-to-end data provider, and benchmarking digitalization progress for global retail banks.
Peter studied Industrial Engineering at Georgia Institute of Technology, where he graduated with highest honors. During University, Peter had internship experiences in the supply chain, finance, and start-up industries. His role spans from implementing e-commerce distribution center for one of the world’s largest retailers, building financial analytics model for consumer banks, to developing pricing and product development strategies for a car subscription start-up. He was also actively involved in various leadership positions on campus, including as the President of Institute of Industrial Engineering, one of the largest student organizations at Georgia Institute of Technology.
Outside of work and academic, Peter is a keen golfer who was a former national athlete, loves to travel, and is a Liverpool Football Club fan. During the weekend, you can find him at coffee shops reading about sports and researching his next travel destinations.
5. Wafa Taftazani
Wafa Taftazani, 24, is MBA student at the University of Cambridge and currently an intern at Grab, the Southeast Asian e-hailing platform. He was Deputy Manager for Corporate and Investment Banking at The Bank of Tokyo-Mitsubishi UFJ, rapidly rising through the ranks since he joined the global banking giant as an Analyst in 2012. He has worked with over 20 multinational corporate clients in various transactions across Asia and Oceania, served as Vision and Mission Ambassador for the Bank, and is active in Young Finance Professionals Indonesia. He was strategy consultant for Cambridge United Football Club and the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, helping to launch the first ever government-organized Nusantara Model United Nations.
He graduated cum laude with BA in International Relations from Parahyangan Catholic University, represented the university at Harvard World MUN in 2011 and Harvard National MUN in 2009, was Winner of the first European Union Intervarsity Debate Championship in 2010, and served as Vice President at the university's International Relations Student Association. He was also active at the university's Bakti Desa program to help build simple infrastructure in West Java's outlying villages. He also interned at the Office of the ASEAN Special Adviser at the European Union Delegation to Indonesia and Brunei Darussalam.
Wafa was invited by the Taiwanese government as Ambassador of Indonesia at the Taiwan Centennial Celebrations in 2011, and has since advocated for closer relationships between Taiwan and its trading partners. He has spoken on youth issues for The Habibie Center, the British Embassy in Jakarta, and BINUS International University.
Wafa is an Indonesian Education Endowment Fund scholar. In his spare time, he enjoys video games, swimming, and automobiles.
